Working on Luna Serena - OpenGEU 8.10

Work in progress

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex has already been released, I know, but this time OpenGEU won’t take too much to be upgraded.

After Luna Crescente, the new big release will be Quarto di Luna, based on the future Ubuntu 9.04, but while we wait for the next revolutionary release of OpenGEU, me and my Team are working on an Intrepid OpenGEU release: 8.10 Luna Serena. In English this name can be translated as “Serene Moon”, because we are mainly concentrating on porting E17 to Intrepid, having it work correctly and blend with the new Ubuntu system. Luna Serena will be a sort of port of a classic Luna Crescente desktop to Intrepid, therefore we have no need for deveopment versions whatsoever. The new OpenGEU will come with some important new features anyway, even if it’s just an Intrepid “Catch-up” (Luna Crescente took too much time to be released and we needed to find a way to sincronize our work with the one from Ubuntu Team), Luna Serena will bring you:
  • An Upgraded and optimized E17, recompiled from the latest sources
  • Upgraded modules, a new Extramenu, faster and freedesktop standard compliant
  • E17-Settings-Daemon, our new daemon, directly developed by Quaker from our Team! This daemon is able of handling all of the Gnome, fonts and wallpaper settings of your desktop and it is even faster and lighter than the XFCE mcs manager we used for Luna Crescente!
  • Upgraded OpenGEU themes manager and OpenGEU themes, all optimized for the new e17 settings daemon!
All of these upgrades will be released as packages update for Luna Crescente user too (the new extramenu’s already there for example).

As for the next OpenGEU, Quarto di Luna, we are planning the release of an official roadmap we’ll follow very closely, so that this time we’ll be able to release the next OpenGEU together with Ubuntu 9.04 for real :)

Luna Serena will be ready in just some days, as soon as we solve some E17 and modules related problem, so please be patient just some time and you’ll be able to play with OpenGEU 8.10, the fastest OpenGEU ever.
