Geubuntu had to change name in OpenGEU because of the trademarks restrictions adopted by Canonical. This is because for Canonical, only a Remix can have the name “ubuntu” or “buntu” in it for free, without violating any of Canonical’s trademarks. A Remix is an Ubuntu derivate using only softwares available in the official repositories, without any third party or customized software too. Geubuntu, instead, used custom repos and tools created by me and the OpenGEU’s team. That’s why we asked Canonical permission to use the Ubuntu name but after several weeks we received no answer at all. Therefore, to avoid violating any of Canonical’s rights, we change name to OpenGEU from now on, unless Canonical accepts, in the future, Geubuntu as an official Ubuntu derivate. Sorry for this inconvenience. This doesn’t change at all the quality of Geubuntu, now called OpenGEU and you can be sure that we’ll continue hard working on this project.
This also means that we had the chance to release a new bug-fixed edition. Only the shutting down taking too much bug is still there but it won’t matter much in the future since we’ll migrate from xfce panel to a working and even lighter one soon. Be sure to download OpenGEU and copy it to your friends. If you already installed Geubuntu, instead, just upgrade to OpenGEU with a simple:
sudo apt-get install opengeu-desktop
and the installation will be automatic. If you don’t have the OpenGEU repos and want to install it from packages, please visit our WIKI.
About WIKI and forums, the addresses had to change, visit the pages of this website and bookmark the new links please. Very simply, every geubuntu name changed to opengeu. Not a big deal I guess.
