Current status of OpenGEU and E17

2010-03-02 13:18:52 by quaker66

Hi again! As you maybe know, we decided to base OpenGEU directly on Debian (Testing tree). ISO building on Debian is currently in testing stage, and what's also important, Enlightenment Foundation Libraries + E17 release is coming soon, it's really close! :) We'd like to release OpenGEU right after E17 is out, and to release as soon as possible, we need your help:

  • Report bugs. The place where you can do that is http://trac.enlightenment.org/e
  • Translate! If you know English enough to do that, and E17 (+ modules, apps) is not fully translated into your language, you can help with that too! The place where you can send translations is mailing list Enlightenment-intl: enlightenment-intl@lists.sourceforge.net. The status of translations, translation teams, po file downloads etc are on http://l10n.enlightenment.org
  • Send patches. They are highly appreciated. The place is again mailing list: enlightenment-devel@lists.sourceforge.net.
You can find sources of EFL, E17, modules, apps etc in Enlightenment SVN: http://svn.enlightenment.org, from sources you can generate translation templates etc. Sooner E17 is out, sooner can be OpenGEU release. While we'll be waiting for E17, we'll also release Debian-based developenment version ASAP.

I wrote on 2010-04-22, here http://opengeu.intilinux.com/news/opengeus-future-and-ubuntu-vs-debian, to change the name to OpenGED (D in idea of Debian)... the name can be a great idea, but when you change the name, then you have to change everything link or relation about OpenGEU... maybe the name "OpenGED", isn't very very good for this reason. But, if you don't have problems with this stuff, then the new name 'OpenGED' its a very recommended. Regards.

I noticed that in recent versions of the OpenGEU was used gdm (graphical login), my question is whether the next version would use the entrance or gdm as the entrance belongs to E17! I hope the OpenGEU coming soon :)

Electro Gypsy wrote: 2010-06-24 17:01:28

If OpenGEU is Open Gnome Enlightenment Ubuntu and the next version will be Debian, does this mean a name change for the distro, e.g. OpenGED? Or will Gnome go too, meaning some other option, e.g. OpenDebiane / OpenDebianE?

What is about the new e17 snapshot? An when we will get the first beta of OpenGEU? I hope before the whole world crashes in 2012!

Guys guys guys, I also like E17 and I am using it daily, but I am sick and tired of the fact that some very simple things do not work as expected. For example, try to add a new application or open some application which has not a default icon attached. Right click and go to "Edit Icon". Click on the icon button and try to browse to the folder of the icon you want to choose for your application (lets suppose the application is google-chrome). You will see that "Go up a Directory" is inactive. The entries below the push-button "Go to Favorites", if you left-click on them do not work (you do not see their contents at the right). The lineedit bar at the bottom after you write some directory and press enter does not "cd" to that directory and so on ... Especially this "Go up a Directory" is buggy all over Elive menus. Why for so many years nobody did anything about that?

my my.. lots of ubuntu based distro are switching to debian. even crunchbang is doing the same. maybe all these distro should collaborate as stated by webboy. looking forward to the new version.

This way "we decided to base OpenGEU directly on Debian (Testing tree" - is VERY GOOD! You project is VERY WELL Enlightenment Foundation Libraries + E17, but Ubuntu have more users, You can solve problem millions people who want optimization Linux distributive for i686, NOT ONLY KERNEL, but application too; it's real - have two repository one for Debian i386, and YOUR - OpenGEU for i686. And Your project OpenGEU will be BEST of all Linux system - fast(lxde and E17) simple from box(may be better - Yoper Linux), TOP 10!!!! Good Luck in Yuor job!

I like your distro it saves me a lot of trouble (I guess), however I am also sick and tired of listning to the enlightenment bs "We will release soon" "oops, problem in code" "We WILL release soon" "On hold lead developer got new job, must concentrate on it..." yada yada. Whey they say they will release it usually takes a long time and it is irritating. As for E17 it has been promised for years, the resent (couple of years)of activity is interesting, but gnome and kde started after enlightenment (if memory serves). Anyhoot, please just upgrade your distro, fix problems or realease testing. If tradition holds E17 will not come until 2012 most likely after the planet blows up.

I used debian+e17 for a lot of time, but after a disaster - :) lol - I took your distro...and i liked it very very much. If OpenGeu will based on Debian...my love will be full. :) Thanks, and good things for all. ps. sorry for my bad english. Buon Tutto e ...grazie. ;)

desperate waiting wrote: 2010-04-30 10:24:12

It would be really nice if you could give us the date/week/month on which the release is ready. It dont has to be the exact day, but a idea of the date would be nice, so that one could plan ahead. I would really want to give quarto di luna (debian) a try, but waiting without knowing the release date is making me crazy and want to try an other distro :( p.s.: Thanks fo all the hard work! :)

archer wrote: 2010-04-27 09:09:08

will there be an alternate installer (debian) too ?

David_J_D wrote: 2010-04-08 19:18:00

Is there a date for a testing version yet? When a testing version is available, can you point me to an ISO as I can spare some time for testing (From a user perspective). Regards David

TheDarkMaster wrote: 2010-03-31 11:12:14

To clarify some points: 1) we'll release a testing version soon, based on Debian. We have some issues though: Geutheme has problems working on the new E we compiled, we are fixint those problems (themes cannot be changed because E17 has no command line options anymore, for now..). Another problem is related to our wizard page, working on it too. 2) This release will be a testing one because E17 is about to be released, finally, in a stable version, thanks to our work too (quaker expecially!). We'll name this version of OpenGEU Quarto di Luna (there has never been an official Quarto di Luna yet) and the version number will be 9.10 because it will be compatible with Ubuntu 9.10 (repos side, i mean). 3) After this release we'll create repos for the new Ubuntu and we'll release a new and finally stable OpenGEU when E17 will be released. Of course, if we'll understand that E17 will be released late, we'll compile it with upgrades and more OpenGEU tools and create a second testing version, don't worry. In any case our repos will always be updated. 4) Testing is a good Debian flavour. It's very updated and it does not contain old packages like stable: we're not going to use experimental though. Exp really gives u the risk to crash your system with upgrades... testing is way better. So, not a rolling release cycle really. U have to keep in mind that OpenGEU contains E17 which is a very experimental software: it's absurd to base it on Stable for now :P

kdenlive>vegas wrote: 2010-03-21 09:20:36

Did I got this right, the ISOs of Opengeu 9.10 are going to be based on debian?

Rubin wrote: 2010-03-18 18:17:05

Minor Note: I would suggest that you change the version schema (creating opengeu's own) now that you have decided to go by way of Debian.

mike wrote: 2010-03-16 04:48:25

I run debian testing (squeeze) everyday. Its safer to run than sid which has many more "paperbag" problems than testing ever will. sid is also known for broken packages. KDE4.3+compiz-kde runs fine on my wifes debian squeeze machine also. Debian testing is a good choice for opengeu IMO.

L wrote: 2010-03-16 01:16:18

Is 9.10 going to be the first release on debian?

Sudoku wrote: 2010-03-14 21:53:15

Bah! Why Testing as supposed to Sid?

wayguest wrote: 2010-03-13 23:49:45

A good projection, bug name not good. Enlightenment is too long, why not rename it Enlight, will simplely. OpenGEU can rename it Edebian or Eubuntu, will better.

Xain wrote: 2010-03-12 13:51:58

Siete fortissimi !!! Porca v...a basato direttamente dal DEBIAN. Keep the good work ;))

webboy wrote: 2010-03-10 00:52:31

Looking forward to new OpenGEU.....but one question. Are you planing to make it rolling distro ? If not, what release circle will be used ? ......eeebuntu is switching to Debian unstable (rolling release), maybe there could be space for cooperation :)

shadowedraven wrote: 2010-03-08 20:28:45

Would you be open to the possibility of concurrently developing a netbook remix? I love opengeu but I've had to do some interesting hacking to get it to work without crashing on my Acer Aspire One. I'll tell you what, it sure turns heads when I have it running and I'm out and about. Thanks!

quaker wrote: 2010-03-04 13:21:27

Verona007: it happens in early stages of testing but never in stage it is now :) stable has old software... testing is good for us

Verona007 wrote: 2010-03-03 11:42:44

Good to see that the Debian wins the contest! But with the testing? Why not the stable? (Because I used the Debian testing, the KDE 4 just available from there, and some of the updates ruined my system. Reinstall, and some time later the new patches ruined again the system) But you know what you do. But I will jitter for you, good work, and good luck!
