Still alive .. and well?

2010-11-13 11:34:41 by thedarkmaster

Hi again after a long time. I want to update you all about status of OpenGEU. Many people probably think the project is dead, they weren't far from right -  yeah, the project was dead. But some days ago i've decided to bring it back to life and try to get you at least working dev release till Christmas. It's going to be based on latest Debian Testing and E17 SVN + EFL Beta 2/3 (depends on when Beta 3 comes) and if possible, feature also some of new GEU tools (final release will feature them).

Please make suggestions and if you want to help with making the release come true, please join the OpenGEU team. I don't really have that much time as I had before, thus we need more people. Also, when the dev version comes, please report bugs and suggest what could be done better, so we can release a well done piece of work finally.

I'll inform you all regularily how it all goes. For questions, use the comment box below and if you want, link this in other places too!

Now these points of data make a beautiful line.
And we're out of beta.
We're releasing on time.
So I'm GLaD. I got burned.
Think of all the things we learned
for the people who are still alive.

...

Stay tuned,

q66

Hey, my names charles, nice to meet you. I may certainly be available to work on this. I have a legion of nice testmachines on my network. Knowledgeable about many aspects of Linux, Android, and Windows kernel and GUI, window managers etc. I am eager to put my vote in for OpenGeu Linux kernel, enlightenment based and perhaps an LXDE version, and maybe a bit of Openbox seasoned on the side. Yea digit man i'm in for some of that. Looking out for your reply. gd'ay an peace

Release IT!!!!!!!!!!

E Addict wrote: 2011-04-04 02:18:19

Seems to be dead...again. Its a shame though, as this was the distro that got me hooked on using Enlightenment a couple of years or so ago when their Luna Nuova release was new. These guys had the right idea for an Enlightenment distro...leaving in all of the functionality of the Gnome base and putting Enlightenment on top of it. Thank goodness E17 is relatively easy to install and configure on normal Ubuntu or Debian if you have a little time to invest in it. However, i would love to see this project live on and would support it for sure. P.S. Don't even bother with Bodhi Linux...it is a joke compared to what OpenGEU was. Bodhi is a skeleton OS...all you can do on a default install is open a terminal or surf the net...not a damn thing else. The default themes are butt ugly too.

Hi. Now that the core EFL 1.0 is finally released (actually jan .29th) , will you get at least an alpha/testing release or is this project dead again?

mike wrote: 2011-02-04 16:54:04

How about that regular info 'cause we sure need to know how you're handling things

OK then, lets see an alpha release. I would certainly be interested in giving some input, and I'd like to see what the OpenGEU community suggests as well. :)

Great to hear this Darkmaster! I still sometimes run my old OpenGEU based on Ubuntu 8.10 in a VM. Sorry i'm not able to help but hope you'll find enough hands. May it work to put your "old" GEU Desktop on an actual Ubuntu? And start development without pressure? Best wishes Joschi

GREAT!!!!!! Keep it up!! I know it's a difficult thing, coding an operating system... Might i make one small suggestion, OpenGEU releases should be named after Stars(Your symbol looks like a burning sun) and there are some great names out there (Sirius, Pollux, Rigel, to name a few). Once again keep it up. I'm actually a student @UWI studying programming and i'm particularly interested in operating systems... so if you guys can teach, i am willing to learn... Well, check out Sabayon Linux also - the guys over there have an E17 version and it works wonders, with a beginner-friendly Gentoo base. 2ble fast, since E17=fast and Sabayon=fast. Much better, lean and no-nonsense, in practice, than any *buntu or whatever similar implementation of E17 so far. Now, how this relates to your project? Like this: others (sabayon, arch, ..., ...) have already done what you were trying to do, while you were trying to find out how to do it and saying big words about it. If you're gonna resurrect it, what would be your uniqueness? Your *really* beautiful graphics might be one of those. These words must sound a bit hostile, but you are judged by what you have said and did (not). Not getting enough people to code for you might be a reason, but it might also mean that people are just not interested. Keep it up guys, but please keep your uniqueness, too! I will for sure stay tuned ;)

Hello, Ive been an enlightenment only user since 2003, Ive been using two other distros with E17 on them, but have recently found OPENGEU 8.10 and love it 98%, I want to love it 100%. So if your low on time, I am a web developer and SEO traffic guy, not a software prgrammer So I can offer to take care of website stuff you may need for this site and maybe do some artistic theme work. I will keep my eyes on this news feed if u want my help, please let me know where to send my email so you can contact me. My English is superb, by the way for translations. :) Thanks. -- Blake

These are really great News! I have been watching the project over the last months and was hoping for the next release. I hope you will find some more helpers to maintain and develop this great distro. I'm not a big coder myself but I will report bugs where I can Welcome back!

Can somebody please post at Distrowatch that OpenGEU is active again. They were talking bout Enlightenment distros in the comments section this past week. I tried to post but I can't! Have I been a bad girl!?! <SHRUG>

Electro Gypsy wrote: 2010-11-18 23:12:51

What about a vanilla Debian Stable with E17 pre-installed as the WM/DE and none of the Gnome / KDE bloat? Quick ... Simple ... Effective ... And all we've ever really wanted After that you could focus on the eye-candy that makes OpenGEU special and package it seperately Users who want the excitement of Unstable can simply update as they wish, without the rest of us having to worry about it Personally, I don't like non-standard distros that mean I have to worry about stuff not working after I install it and having to either spend days tweaking it ... or else giving up on it All I want is a perfectly stable Debian with E17 on top - After that I want to be able to choose whatever widgets and eyecandy (like ecomorph) as I want it ... And I'd find an OpenGEU package that I could just add over the top perfect

nspyraishn wrote: 2010-11-16 06:15:12

since it's going to be based on debian testing, focus should be on stability and performance, with a little emphasis on functionality. Also, the artwork should be gtk-integrated.

Jetbird wrote: 2010-11-14 22:12:15

Oh and if you have the guestion why I don;t use Pinguy OS E17 remix or alternative Ubuntu based E17 distro is that Ubuntu for some reason try to fry the pc I want to use Linux, pure Debian, Opensuse, Fedora or mandriva based systems doens;t cause the strange behavior. It was such an amazing news to find that Opengeu is going Debian. SO even if it was only a remix of Debian with a nice e17 environment people who are looking for debian based E17 distros would use it even without fancy this distro exceptional tools. Clean working debian with E17 default usable manager would be welcome at least in my point of view.

Jetbird wrote: 2010-11-14 22:04:38

Hello! For starters I think you could simply make E17 ready Debian Linux with software, packages and hardware managers. Something like Yeast in Opensuse. So I think synaptic manager or something like that. Propriatery drivers built in and support for legacy drivers (after all most people who come to E17 has old hardware in most cases) a web browser (Firefox and Chrome, wireless connection and internet auto detect a windows manager with usability in mind ( most E17 distros has some sort of a fusion between selected windows manger like Gnome or KDE and E17) (Yes I am new to Linux, so many things might sound silly from my lips but I am telling things from the noob perspective) Look at the Pinguy OS remix with E17. So I think simple and fast start would be good, because if you would begin to search for Debian based E17 distro, there are only two choices: Elive (Not free) and squeeze box e17 remix which isn;t very much finished re-spin version of Debian (my experience is that it didn;t had final hardware detection (wireless)and corrupted installation (refused to install because of an error). So i think a simple remix of debian with E17 as default that works would be nice while the finish version of Opengeu would be accomplished. My two cents here. Best regards.

Currently the OpenGEU team has only quaker as a coder. There's MadnessMike too, but he can code only in GAMBAS. We need help, we need coders, but we already tried in the past to call for coders and nobody helped. So, the project's vitality depends on only one person, the only coder we have: quaker. There's not much I can do about this, sorry, if he's too busy and cannot continue developing what we need, OpenGEU cannot go on. Currently we are starting from recompiling packages again, and that's only a small step forward, we'll have to build everything back. So, please, if you can help, do it. We cannot rely only on Quaker alone forever.
